A pip (percentage in point) is the smallest standard price move for a currency pair — 0.0001 for most pairs, 0.01 for pairs quoted in Japanese yen. Pip value is what that single-pip move is worth in money terms, and it scales with both the pair you're trading and the size of your position.

How pip value is calculated

Pip value = pip size × contract size × position size (lots), converted into your account currency if it differs from the pair's quote currency. For a standard lot (100,000 units) of EUR/USD, one pip is worth $10 to a USD-denominated account: 0.0001 × 100,000 = $10. Halve the position size to a mini lot (0.10) and the pip is worth $1; a micro lot (0.01) makes it $0.10.

Why it matters

Pip value is the other half of the position-sizing equation — it's what the lot size calculator uses internally to turn a risk budget into a position size. Knowing it directly is useful for sanity-checking a trade before you place it, or for working out potential profit/loss on a setup with a known stop and target in pips.
